Role of Silanol Group in Sn-Beta Zeolite for Glucose Isomerization and Epimerization Reactions

چکیده
Density functional calculations are used to elucidate the role of the silanol group adjacent to the active site Sn metal center of the Sn-BEA zeolite in the isomerization and epimerization of glucose. We find that the silanol group plays an important role in the isomerization reaction, wherein hydride transfer and subsequent proton transfer occur in a single step with a lower energy of activation. Epimerization, on the other hand, proceeds via a mechanism similar to the Biĺik mechanism and has lower activation barrier when the silanol group does not participate directly in the transition state. Our calculations indicate that cooperative effects, often encountered in enzymatic catalysis, promote hydride transfer in the isomerization reaction but not for the Biĺik mechanism for epimerization.

Competitive Adsorption of Substrate and Solvent in Sn‐Beta Zeolite During Sugar Isomerization
The isomerization of 1,3-dihydroxyactone and d-glucose over Sn-Beta zeolite was investigated by in situ 13 C NMR spectroscopy. The conversion rate at room temperature is higher when the zeolite is dehydrated before exposure to the aqueous sugar solution. Mass transfer limitations in the zeolite micropores were excluded by comparing Sn-Beta samples with different crystal sizes. Periodic density ...

The isomerization of glucose into fructose is a large-scale reaction for the production of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS; reaction performed by enzyme catalysts) and recently is being considered as an intermediate step in the possible route of biomass to fuels and chemicals. Here, it is shown that a large-pore zeolite that contains tin (Sn-Beta) is able to isomerize glucose to fructose in aque...
متن کاملSn-Beta zeolites with borate salts catalyse the epimerization of carbohydrates via an intramolecular carbon shift
Carbohydrate epimerization is an essential technology for the widespread production of rare sugars. In contrast to other enzymes, most epimerases are only active on sugars substituted with phosphate or nucleotide groups, thus drastically restricting their use. Here we show that Sn-Beta zeolite in the presence of sodium tetraborate catalyses the selective epimerization of aldoses in aqueous medi...

The identity of the active sites of hydrophobic Lewis acid zeolites was elucidated by solid-state P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy following adsorption of trimethylphosphine oxide (TMPO) probe molecules. The adsorption of TMPO on these materials resulted in distinct P NMR resonances between δiso = 59.9 and 54.9 ppm that correspond to unique chemical environments of the Lewis acid...

The conversion of glucose into fructose for the production of high-fructose corn syrups (HFCS) is the largest biocatalytic process in the world, and it recently has been considered as a key intermediate step in the conversion of biomass to fuels and chemicals. This reaction is typically catalyzed by an immobilized enzyme, xylose isomerase, that generates an equilibrium mixture of 42 wt% fructos...
